The Patient

Lot was injured in the war between the worlds. Lot hared being kept still; he was an energetic man who loved being out of doors.
But that came to an end when he had been picked up by a griffin and dropped fifteen feet above ground. The griffin had only let Lot fall so close to the ground ’cause Lot had been busily chopping at the griffin’s claws with his axe. Lot had been told he was lucky to be alive. Any father up in the air and he would have died instantly. He sure didn’t feel lucky.
“Nurse could you get me some water please?” Lot asked , but all the nurses were busy. He sighed in frustration and leaned his head back against the ground. He was so weak now! He couldn’t even get himself some water!
A little girl of twelve was curled up into a ball in the corner of the make shift shelter. She was scared and stared in shock at all the blood. She now hated the sight of blood. It made her nauseas. She whimpered. She was brought out of her shock when she heard a voice ask for water. Something compelled her to get him some water. She hurriedly walked to where the water was kept and got a cup full.
Lot was staring at the dragon and griffin filled sky. There was fire and ice flying. It was pretty if one didn’t think of all the lives being lost. He jerked in surprise and yelled, “ What the!?!” As water fell onto his face without any kind of warning.
“I’m s-sorry s-sir, but I t-tripped a little. H-here’s your wa-ater ,” a little girl stammered nervously.
Lot stared at her in shock ;she was young! What was she doing in a place like this?
He stared at her then took the water she offered, “Thank you, very much…how old are you?”
“Twelve s-sir,” she said as he eagerly drank the water she had given him. ‘ She is young’, he thought as she took back the cup.
“Would you like some more water sir?” She asked without stuttering. He shook his head, “But I would like some company, if you wouldn’t mind talking to me?” He said as she looked disappointed at not having a task to keep her busy. She nodded. He knew how that felt.
“S-ssoo, what is a twelve year old girl in the midst of all this?” He asked curiously.
“My mother is a nurse , and my father is a doctor. Our village was attacked , and I wanted to be with my parents,” she explained.
“Oh, it’s like that is it? It’s scary, isn’t it?”
She nodded and asked, “ What about you?”
“Me? I joined the M.F.B. when I was eighteen, never expecting to be in an actual war. That’s the Marching Force Brigade,” he explained.
“I know what the M.F.B. is! I’ve been I’ve been hanging around here long enough!…How old are you,” she asked.
“I’m twenty-three. Pretty old huh? I’m sure feeling my age and beyond today<“ he groaned playfully.
She laughed then sobered up and asked,” How did …you know, …get hurt?”
‘A griffin thought he’d like to give me a ride to heaven, but I decided Peter at the golden gates had to wait. So he dropped me. I fell now I’m paralyzed from my waist down,” he said trying not to sound bitter.
“You’re lucky to be alive,” she said softly.
‘Alive, huh? I’m paralyzed. What sort of life is that?”
They looked at the moon shimmering in the pond not fifteen feet away.
“It’s pretty, isn’t it?” She asked.
“He only grunted in agreement.
She sighed softly, “ Tell me do you want to live?”
“Live, huh?” He asked.
“Yes. I was once hurt so badly I thought I’d never recover. My parents were so worried about me. But I didn’t care ‘cause I was hurt. No one could feel what I was feeling. But you know what , they did. They knew ‘cause they loved me.”
He stared at this twelve year old girl and thought over her explanation. He didn’t welcome her opinion entirely, but he thought it over.
“It’s up to you, Lot, to discover what life has in store for you. No one else will be able to do it for you…” she fell silent.
He sighed knowing she was right, “How do you know so much for a twelve year old?”
“My parents?” She said with a slight smile.
“Could you point them out to me?” He asked curiously.
She pointed to a tired and haggard looking man, “That’s Pappa,” then she pointed to a woman rushing around but always had a kind smile for the wounded, “That’s Mamma.”
He closed his eyes as she started singing a soft lullaby:
“Come all dragons,
children sing.
Come all the dragons,
children laugh.
For the dragons
love the children’s
laughter.
His eyes grew heavy and he slept soundly. But before he was totally lost to sleep he heard her say,
“The sun is rising….Sleep well Lot.
Lot slept peacefully until a hand shook him gently, “Sir here is your water,” said a kind voice.
He opened his eyes and saw the little girl’s mother offering him a cup of water.
“But your daughter already gave me some water. Thank you anyway,” he said but took the water anyway.
The woman froze in shock , “ My daughter, sir? But she died several years ago when she was twelve.” The lady left with tears running down her cheeks.
He felt like a heel but knew he had seen her!
Who was she then?
He stared up into the sky and saw only dragons flying in the air above him!
The war had been won!! He started crying.
~~~~~~~
That had been over three years ago and he had met with the war council to track down the girl’s parents. He wanted to know her name. He finally found her parent and spoke to them and found out where she had been buried.
He was now walking with a cane ,but he was walking. He had a bouquet of Forget-Me-Nots.
Her name was Catha Gardens.
“Thank you, Catha Gardens,” he said softly.
A tinkling laugh sounded through the breeze,
“No thank you, Lot. And good luck.”
